Yes this has happened on many different occasions sadly. There is only so much that can be proved in a court system, and because of false witness accounts and pure chance circumstances there are many people that have served the death penalty without actually committing the crime.

A no contest plea means that you do not admit or deny committing the crime, but you are not going to fight the charge. If you plead no contest, you are accepting whatever punishment the court gives you, but you are not admitting guilt.
If someone kills another person, they should die as well for committing murder to a innocent person. Or you need to go to a trail.
