  • Pardon - a full and legal forgiveness for a crime. In essence, the President forgives the defendant for any crime he or she has committed and orders an immediate release. However, the President may not issue pardons for people convicted of state crimes, only federal ones. Also, no person convicted in an impeachment trial may receive a pardon.
  • Reprieve - the delay or postponement of an execution sentence. The date may be moved back, but the execution is not canceled.
  • Power of Commutation- reducing the length of a sentence or a finance imposed by a federal court.
  • Amnesty - Finally, the President may grant amnesty, which is a group pardon to a large number of people who have violated the law. In 1977, President Carter granted amnesty to all Americans who evaded the draft for the Vietnam War.
