To effectively answer this, picture the cereal aisle at Walmart. On the top shelf, you've got the name brand stuff. Rice Krispies, Apple Jacks, Count Chocula, Cocoa Puffs, and they're fairly expensive.

Two shelves down, you have the exact same cereals, usually made in the exact same packaging plant, but different names and much cheaper. Rice Crisps, Apple Os, Choco Flakes, Chocolate Puff Balls.

The generic prescriptions are the exact same drug as the name brand prescriptions, but they're much cheaper. Yes, sometimes the amounts of non-active ingredients do vary from the name brand but that has little to no impact on the effectiveness of the drug itself.

Generic Prescriptions are Less Expensive But as Effective as Name Brand Drugs?

Name brand and generic prescriptions differ mainly in cost, with generic versions being less expensive. Generics also may differ in appearance, packaging, preservatives and taste. These less expensive versions of prescription drugs, however, must contain the same active ingredients as the name brand drug and should be administered in the same manner, such as through liquid form or oral capsules, as well as in the same dosage.

You have no insurance and you need prescriptions filled?

You can have prescriptions filled at any pharmacy with or without insurance. Without insurance you will be paying full price for the medications. If money is a concern, many pharmacies are offering generic medications for as little as $4.00 (i.e. Wal-mart, Target, etc.) If you are on a brand name medications you can call and shop around for the least expensive price. Another option is talk to your doctor and see if there is a medication that works similar to your brand name medication, but is a generic medication.

Valium's generic name is Diazepam, and it can only be prescribed by its generic name within the U.K. on N.H.S. prescriptions. If a sporting event were conducting a 'Doping Screen' for the use of Benzodiazepines, BOTH Lorazepam and Diazepam (Valium) could be traced, as chemically, they are 'cousins.'
