  • Card Reader -- While most cameras offer cords that allow you to plug your camera right into the computer, it can be a hassle and this method often drains your batteries. A card reader, which is hooked up via a USB, provides quick uploads of your images without all the hassle of hooking up your camera. To download your images, simply place your memory card (including CompactFlash or MicroDrive) into the card reader and then view your images on your hard drive. Card readers run from $30 to 80 (typically).
  • Memory Cards -- You dont need to purchase a card with the highest storage capacity. Having a few smaller capacity cards (32, 48 MB) is better than having one high capacity card, especially since the higher capacity cards are more fragile and slow your camera down. If you do want to upgrade your memory, consider purchasing a MicroDrive or a CompactFlash card. Each has its pros and cons. A MicroDrive is a mini hard drive that offers up to 4 GB of storage space. While the additional storage space is appealing, they are often slow and fragile, meaning a drop on the sidewalk could cause significant damage and loss of data. CompactFlash cards can be more expensive, but are faster and are less fragile then the MicroDrive.
  • Batteries and Battery re-chargers -- Digital cameras go through a lot of batteries quickly. While it may seem impossible, you can go through up to two sets of batteries a day on a full day of camera use. Purchasing extra rechargeable batteries and a battery recharger provides peace of mind that youll not be stranded without battery power. Most cameras use two to four AA batteries, but these drain fast. An alternative are Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, which last longer and can be recharged many times.
  • Camera bag -- Digital cameras and their equipment are fragile. Exposure to weather, sunlight and even humidity can have a huge impact on your camera. Many manufacturers now offer bags especially for digital cameras that provide special compartments for memory cards, batteries, and backup storage media.
  • All of the above are good accessories and generally essential to taking good care of your digital camera. I would also recommend a good cleaner.

As you are choosing new accessories for your digital camera, you will find that you have the option between getting name brand accessories and generic versions. In most situations, it would be better if you chose the name-brand version. Digital camera accessories almost always work better if you purchase an accessory that was designed for your camera brand. The generic accessories will tend to work less effectively when coupled with a name-brand camera.
