It depends what the fuel is that you are burning.

  • Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas which is causing global warming.
  • Biomass and biofuels like biodiesel are carbon neutral. They do release carbon dioxide when burnt, but it is carbon dioxide that they removed recently from the atmosphere (during the growing season).
  • Fuels like hydrogen are almost perfect. When hydrogen burns, its only emission is water.

Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas (usually to produce electricity or to power transport) releases into the environment extra carbon that has been stored underground for millions of years. The carbon cycle is unable to cope with all this extra carbon, which (in the form of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide) joins all the other gases in our atmosphere and enhances the greenhouse effect, which keeps the earth's heat from escaping into space. This enhanced, or accelerated greenhouse effect is causing global warming.
