They are to rest your head against so that the neck muscles do not have to support the head in the forward looking position all the time. This is obviously important for the driver. Also, in the case of a shunt, the headrest will minimise whiplash injury be preventing the head from being pushed back.
Modern cars are fitted with headrests (and recommended to be kept at a height that is level with the occupant's neck and head) in order to protect the neck and head from whiplash in the case of a collision. In a collision the use of an appropriately adjusted headrest will end the backwards motion of the head when a force acts upon impact. i hope this helps, this is like my first answer on here ahah :)

There are forces acting on the car. They are just equal to the force of the car acting on the force. In example, gravity is acting on the car, but the car is pushing back equally. Therefore, the car doesn't move.
Somebody pushing the car; friction slowing down the car; gravity acting on the car (this is especially relevant if the car is going up or down a slope); the engine pushing the car forwards.

Airbags, seatbelts, headrests, dashboard, for children 5yrs and younger need to have a portable car seat.
In older cars, most seats had a low back with adjustable headrests. Over time most have been replaced with high-back seats with no adjustable headrests.
Front seat headrests are not adjustable.
There are many areas of a car that a DVD player or monitor can be installed. There are systems available to let you install a screen in the headrests, roof or even the dash.

How do you retract rear seat headrests on 2006 clk 350mercedes convertible?

Newton's first law of motion explains the need for head rests because when a car drives when being in a state of non-motion, the passengers in the car will continue to remain without motion. The force of movement will push the passengers back until they compensate for motion. Since the head is likely to get jerked back quickly during this time, it explains the need for headrests.
