Horses are used mostly for pleasure: horse racing, war reenactments, rodeo, horse shows, fox hunting, trail riding, polo, gaming, wagon rides, etc. However, there are still some horses used for working: Amish and some homesteaders still use horses to plow their fields and to pull their buggies for transportation. Horses are used for police work in cities and also patrol forrests. Some horses were even used by the military recently in Afghanistan as they were better suited to the mountainous terrain. Some loggers still use horses to haul logs out of the woods.

If there whereby horses, we won't have cars!
Now that we have cars, we continue to use horses anyways for Sprite reasons. Of corse different breeds have different jobs
Draft horses pull carriages and barges
Thurobreds are rasehorses as are saddle breds
Quarter horses are used in rodeos and by cow boys because they are good at edging
And Shetland ponies And fellabellas pull small carts! There Are many other uses for horses I just can't name all of them!:)

∙ 13y agoThey're hardly used for the farmwork anymore, they're used as pulling horses for competitions. Some beer brewery have them as mascots. They're ridden alot and are used as family horses. They pull wagons and carriages.

How has horse riding changed over the past years?
At first, horse riding was all about necessity and hunting for the prehistoric, primitive people. They didn't have any tack (equipment) and their knowledge of the care-taking of horses was basic so the horses didn't last very long. Horse-riding became more about long-distance transport and cart-pulling in later years. Horses were often used in war because of their brave and loyal nature. Only the aristocracy had well-bred horses and the rest were owned by lowly tramps, like cart-horses. Mainly male adults rode and they used horses for hunting for entertainment. Horses were then used in farming but they weren't much ridden for this. Nowadays, horse-riding is both a leisure activity that is popular among young children and adults, and in many cases girls ride more than boys, and an art from (i.e. dressage). It is also fiercely competitive, with horse-racing being a popular sport, and the police use horses as well (i.e. mounties).
