To the south and southwest of the city there are mountains. Dublin is a coastal city and to the east is the Irish Sea. The city is built on the river Liffey, which flows through the centre of the city. The city slopes up slightly on each side, and this is increased as you get further north, and particularly south. A number of other major rivers flow though the city, the main two being the Tolka and the Dodder. The Dodder flows into the Liffey close to its mouth, and the Tolka enters the sea just north of where the Liffey does. Dublin Bay is formed by land curving around to the south and particularly to the north. A narrow isthmus joins Howth to the rest of Dublin and forms the northern boundary of Dublin Bay. Dublin also has two major canals. They are the Royal Canal and the Grand Canal. Both help to encircle the centre of the city.
