Inselbergs are steep sided hills that rise above a surrounding relatively flat plain. They appear to form because the rock making up the inselberg is more resistant to erosion than the rocks that once made up the surrounding plain.

What is the difference between etchplanation and pediplanation?
The main difference between etchplanation and pediplanation is at the second stage of their granite weathering processes. At the second stage of the etchplanation weathering process, exhumation occurs downwards, weathering granite vertically - resulting in steep sided granite landforms such as inselbergs or tors. For the pediplanation process however, exhumation occurs laterally, forming usually broad and gently sloping land surfaces. Accompanying the pediplanation process are usually river erosion processes, thus further widening the valley and even forming extensive plains (pediplanes).

Along the eastern coast is the Great Dividing Range, which extends from the far north down to Victoria, ending in the west of Victoria. In the southeast, this range features Australia's highest point, Mt Kosciuszko, among the Australian Alps, which feature significant snowfalls in winter. There is a great variety of forests, bushland, rainforests, deserts, mountains and plains. Even the deserts vary from gibber plains to sandy deserts to arid ats of land dotted with saltbush and bluebush. Inland Australia is very dry, mostly flat, and characterised by salt lakes, some of which are below sea level. Some mountains - inselbergs as well as mountain ranges - rise up from the desert plains, and these are mostly treeless.
