A leap tide is a New England term to refer to in the Atlantic Ocean what are called king tides in the Pacific Ocean in Australia and environs and even in Southern California. These tides occur when the sun and moon coincide to be at their closest points to the earth, thus exerting the maximum gravitational force on the oceans. These tides occur in January, February, March, and in June, July, and August. Cf "king tides" in Wikipedia, an article written by someone from the Pacific rim which does not mention "leap tides".
