What is the Difference between WBM and WMM roads?

WBM (Water Bound Macadam) and WMM (Wet Mix Macadam) are used for Road construction in Base course layer. WMM is a new technology. difference between WBM and WMM can be summarized as below:Stone aggregate used in WBM is larger in size compared to WMM. In case of WBM its size varies between 45 mm to 90 mm depending upon the grade while in case of WMM aggregate size varies between 4.75 mm to 20 mmIn case of WBM stone aggregate, screening material and binders are overlaid one after another respectively at the time of construction. But in case of WMM, aggregate and binding materials are premixed in a batching plant or concrete mixing machine and then brought to site for overlaying and rolling.Materials used in WBM are stone aggregate, screening material (Kankar or murrum or smaller stone aggregate for filling up the voids ) and/or binding material (stone dust or Quary dust of PI not less than 6). materials used in WMM are Stone aggregate and binders (Stone dust or Quary dust of PI not less than 6)Quantity of WBM is generally measured in Cubic Meter while quantity of WMM is measured in Square Meter.

What is a WBM road?

WBM stands for Water Bound Macadam, and the term WBM road was derived in the memory of an engineer by name Macadam who designed and formulated this road section. This road is laid by binding the in-situ layers of boulders, stones, fine aggregates and fillers. The filler is made from the mixture of sand combined with either moorum quary dust, or soil that is avilable in that locality. The filler is mixed with water and is used to fix stone boulders and the layers of coarse stones of varying sizes by compacting with a road roller to form the base of a road. The road can be used in this form itself. As an improvement, you can apply concreting or black topping above the WBM to make it better. Please see related link for the method of preparation a WBM road.

What is the procedure of Construction of WBM road?

step 1-sight cleaning. step 2-excavation of sight. step 3-prepration of sub grade layer. step 4=prepration of base layer. step 5-prepration of base course.

What is wmm road?

For construction and repairing of National Highways up to the stage of laying of bitumen, water bound macadam (WBM) would be replaced by wet mix macadam (WMM) . Although WMM costs more, roads paved with WMM have greater quality. Moreover, black-topping can be done soon after laying WMM unlike WBM, said an official source. Waiting for WBM layer to dry up and solidify often takes days and causes much dusting of the road thereby hampering traffic. However, a road laid with WMM can be opened to traffic immediately after. According to procedures of laying WBM, stone types known as IRC (Indian Red Congress) grade I, II and III should be used. But in Manipur only IRC grade II and IRC grade III are used. These three grades of stones should be laid out layer above layer before covering it with earth. Then the layer is soaked with water before running it over by roller to solidify the road surface. It takes around a month for such a road surface to dry up before black-topping can be done. In WMM method, stones, binding material and water are mixed proportionately and the mixture is laid out at one time. Such road once run over by roller can be opened to traffic. Bitumen can also laid immediately after, said the source. Some states have already adopted WMM method since a few years back. As roads laid with WMM have greater quality, the same method will be applied while repairing Moreh-Pallel sector and North AOC-Maram sector of NH 39 on trial basis. The Ministry of Shipping, Surface Transport and Highways has also instructed the State Government to use WMM in place of WBM. Subsequently, work orders issued for repairing different segments of NH 39 specified use of WMM.

Road?

A road is a thoroughfare route or way on land between two places that has been paved or otherwise improved to allow travel by foot or some form of conveyance including a vehicle, cart, bicycle, truck, and buses. Purpose of Road Classification A road network is composed of various types of roads, each of which performs a particular service in facilitating vehicular travel between points of trip origin and destination, and in providing access to the property. Road classification is the orderly grouping of roads into systems according to the type and degree of service they provide to the public. Classification of Roads 1. Based on Materials Earthen roads Gravel roads Murrum roads Kankar roads WBM roads Bituminous roads Concrete roads 2. Based on Location and Function National highways State highways District roads Rural roads or village roads 3. Based on Traffic Volume Light traffic roads Medium traffic roads High traffic roads 4. Based on Economy Low-cost roads Medium cost roads High-cost roads 5. Based on Traffic Type Pedestrian ways Cycle tracks Motorways 6. Based on Rigidity Flexible roads Rigid roads 7. Based on Topography Plain area roads Hilly area roads Factors Affecting Classification of Roads Many different classification systems have been introduced and used for a particular purpose. The basis for some of these classifications are: Legal control Surface type Function Geometric elements Location Traffic volume

Inhibition in drilling fluids?

Inhibited drilling fluids are mainly used to prevent shale swelling during drilling operations. These drilling muds can be either oil-based or water-based. The most effective way to prevent shale swelling is using oil-based-mud (OBM), but water based muds (WBM) can also be used if such inhibitors like KCl, etc are added to the drilling fluid.
