What are metal and non metal?

Metals are the elements which have tendency to loose electrons from their valence shells and form cations. example: copper, gold, silver, aluminum, zinc, lead, etc.....

Nonmetals are the elements which have tendency to gain electrons in their valence shells and form anions. example: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulphur, phosphorous , chlorine, bromine, iodine etc........

The nonmetals are located on the upper right side of the Periodic Table. Nonmetals are separated from metals by a line that cuts diagonally through the region of the periodic table containing elements with partially filled p orbitals.

MetalsMost elements are metals. On the periodic table, metals are separated from nonmetals by a zig-zag line stepping through carbon, phosphorus, selenium, iodine and radon.

Non Metals (right of the "staircase" on the periodic table)- an element that tends to be a poor conductor of heat and electric current; nonmetals generally have properties opposite of those to metals.
