One of the most common, I think, is that the parent of a child who seems out of control is a bad parent. Also, one of the best management skills is to keep a structured schedule for the child--as the child grows older it is hard for him/her (and maybe teachers) to recognize that the development and use of the skills is a coping skill and not a reflection of intelligence. Actually, it is a general truism that ADD people are some of the most intelligent people on the planet--not the most stupid.

ADHD has numerous medical evidence to verify the legitimacy of the disorder; however, there are still many misconceptions about ADHD. These include but are not limited to the following:

  • All kids with ADHD are hyper - Some individuals have the inattentive subtype and do not display and hyperactive symptoms. These individuals can look 'normal' for a person to watch but be unable to focus.
  • ADHD is caused by bad parenting - Numerous medical reports verify the disorder is related to chemical deficiency within the brain (too little dopamine).
  • Medication is the only effective way at treating ADHD - The best treatment for ADHD is a combination of medical treatments. In some cases, medication does not work for ADHD and psychotherapy and other treatments are needed.

Gerbils do not experience attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the same way that humans or some other animals do. Gerbils may exhibit behaviors that appear hyperactive, but this is usually within normal range for their species. If you are concerned about your gerbil's behavior, it's best to consult with a veterinarian who specializes in exotic pets.
