The three most common nutrients are: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. These are represented by their 'letters' from the Periodic Table of elements: N, P and K.

These are also the three numbers listed on most bags of fertilizer. Examples: 10-10-10, 10-6-4, 24-6-4... they represent the 'amount' of each element. An easy way to remember what they do is by saying "Up, down and all around." This is in the same order as the elements: Nitrogen is Up, Phosphorus is Down and Potassium is all around. (the direction comes from the view of the soil level: Nitrogen helps keep a plant green and aids in photosynthesis; Phosphorus aids in root development and water absorption; while potassium is needed for all over health...)

Other than that, the key component in all plants (like all animals) is water. Hydrogen from water is required to carry the electrons gained in photosynthesis and help break down the Carbon Dioxide molecules. The same generation of energy helps to create various sugars: Fructose, Sucrose and even Glucose (all with a mix of one carbon, one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms - multiplied by the same number. i.e.: C6-H12-O6 would be glucose) Extra carbon is then 'grounded' to itself in either a C3 or C4 molecule depending on the plant while excess oxygen is released into the air.
