Giving high-school students a credit card provides them with instant empowerment, far more potent than anything senior citizen's of today got from their parent's living in the average household. If you were rich, you probably got what you wanted anyway. If you were poor, you got only what you needed. In my case, getting the keys to the family car was the ultimate of empowerment.

What matters most, though, is what the high-school student of today does with such empowerment. The entire range is covered, from students who have a strict sense of responsibility and discipline to students who believe they are owed the privilege of having a credit card.

Only the parents know which part of the range their child fits in. In my opinion, I would give my high-school children a credit card. However, I would let them know the ramifications of misusing such a powerful responsibility. It is important to let your kids believe you trust them. It is equally important to realize if they are trustworthy. Only then will you have an idea of what type of adults they could, would, or might become.

What Are the Credit Qualifications for Grad School Government Loans & Grants?

After getting into graduate school, many students are surprised to find their greatest stress is not school or homework. Rather, their greatest stress usually turns out to be their financial situation. In grad school, money is tight for any student. Eating out during finals week and shopping to relieve stress are common ways students quickly rack up credit card debt. After students rack up credit card debt in grad school, they usually notice their credit score has been severely damaged. This can cause students to worry about whether they will be able to qualify for government loans. The government does put forth credit requirements for obtaining a GradPLUS or Direct Stafford Loan. The GradPLUS loan has the most stringent credit requirements. Many students can find peace of mind in understanding what the government does not consider in assigning GradPLUS loans. The government will not consider a student's credit score, debt to income ratio, or employment status in assigning loans to students. This is a huge relief for many students who have a credit score below 600 or have an unemployment status. Many students also have a large debt to income ratio in grad school. Experts estimate that grad students carry an average of $5,800 in credit card debt. There are certain marks on a credit report that the U.S. Department of Education will take into consideration in disapproving someone for a GradPLUS loan. If a student has declared bankruptcy, then he or she will be denied a credit check. This only applied for a Chapter 7, 11, or 12 bankruptcy within the past 5 years. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy is not considered adverse credit. If one has voluntarily surrendered in the last 5 years, then this will disqualify a person from being able to obtain a GradPLUS loan. Other conditions apply to how a person has handled his or her home payments. If a person has had his or her home repossessed in the last 5 years, then this will be a signal that one can not afford to take out loans from the government. If a foreclosure proceeding has begun or occurred in the last 5 years, a studen will also be denied a credit check.Lastly, if a student has accounts that are 90 days or more delinquent on his or her credit report, then the government will also disapprove him or her for loans.By considering these factors for obtaining loans from the government, a student can see whether grad school is a smart financial option for him or her.
