Mechanical digestion happens...well...mechanically. The mouth chewing food or the stomach and other associated organs squeezing and churning food are some examples. Chemical digestion happens with the presence of enzymes. Enzymes breakdown substances into smaller units. The mouth uses chemical digestion as well as mechanical digestion because it secretes amylase (an enzyme targeting carbohydrates) and has a voluntary chewing motion. The stomach uses chemical digestion as well as mechanical digestion because it secretes enzymes like pepsinogen and gastric lipase and churns and squeezes the food introduced from the esophagus.
