We call them 'chips' in other countries they are known as 'fries' or 'French fries' the confusion arises in America, American 'chips' are what the British call 'crisps' a very thin slice of potato deep fried until crisp and golden.

Its biological origins are yams or sweet potatoes. However, when grown in a cooler/cold climate, they loose their sweetness. They are a very starchy vegetable, but do contain ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). They grow under the surface of the ground. When dug up, they must be kept in the dark. If exposed to light they become green , which is a very poisonous compound. Their origins are the Americas, and were brought to Europe in the 16th Century by Sir Walter Raleigh, who also brought tomatoes and tobacco to Europe.
