There are several Buddhist practices. The most well known is Tibetan Buddhism with the charismatic Dalai Lama. Lesser known is Zen.

I am a member of SGI, which is a lay organization that has members in 190 countries all over the world. I can only tell you about our practice.

Members of the SGI practice the Buddhism taught by the thirteenth-century Japanese monk Nichiren. At the core of Nichiren's Buddhism are the phrase Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and a mandala referred to as the Gohonzon.

There are three basic elements to the practice of Nichiren Buddhism: chanting the phrase Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as a prayer for oneself and others; studying the teachings of Nichiren; and making efforts to share the teachings of Buddhism, to spread the Buddhist perspective of life's inherent dignity and potential. SGI members perform a morning and evening practice known as Gongyo, which consists of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra.

The "Law" Buddhism teaches that a universal Law (Dharma) underlies everything in the universe. This is the very essence of life. One could also think of it as the fundamental rhythm of life and the universe. Nichiren identified this Law or essence as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. He taught that by correctly carrying out the practice of Buddhism anyone is able to bring their individual life into harmony with the greater life of the universe. The result of this is that one is able to experience greater wisdom, courage, life force and compassion (the qualities of this life-essence). This, practically, is what it means to manifest Buddhahood, or an enlightened life condition.

There are many specific practices, like saying mantras, meditating, doing prostrations, being charitable, making offerings and the like, but generally a Buddhist practitioner will see his or her entire life as being a practice; a part of the path, or Dharma. A Buddhist who does any activity with the earnest intention of benefiting all sentient beings is practicing the Dharma. Even while walking down the street, if one is thinking 'who is the "I" who is walking down the street? Is it my legs doing the walking? Is it my head, thinking about it? What is this thing I call "self"?' one is practicing the Dharma.

Buddhists do not worship any person or deity, including The Buddha. They show him reverence by bowing to his image but we do not say prayers to him. Buddhist prayers are more like a mantra in which the person praying is reciting a lesson (sutra) or guideline which tells them how to behave and act. For example, a prayer for compassion is "may all beings be well, happy and peaceful". The idea behind this prayer is for the person praying to develop compassion and loving kindness to all. Therefore prayer in Buddhism is self-directed.

With all that said when we practice meditation we usually sit in front of a statute of The Buddha or some other holy person, again not to worship, but to remind us of the ideal we strive for. We meditate at whatever time we can or when we feel it is needed.
