In November 2013, the American Heart Association and the America College of Cardiology released new guidelines for the treatment of high blood cholesterol. Broadly, the guidelines identified four groups of people with elevated Heart disease risk who should take cholesterol-lowering statin medication. Those at risk include anyone with: a) cardiovascular disease; b) LDL (bad) cholesterol of 190 mg/dL or higher; c) anyone over 40 with Type 2 Diabetes; and d) anyone whose online Heart disease risk calculator result is a 10-year risk of 7.5 percent or higher. If you are in one of these risk groups, the significant health benefits of statins – lowering cholesterol and thus lowering the probability of heart disease – have been proven to outweigh the risks. That said, statins can have side effects – sometimes serious. Serious side effects can include liver damage, type 2 Diabetes, and muscle inflammation and even muscle damage. If you take any statin, be sure to go to your follow up appointments where your liver will be checked  and tell your doctor if you have any muscle pain.
