The advantage is that is requires the elected president to consider a wide variety of national interests rather than putting all his focus on one segment of the population. If popular vote determined the election, a candidate might be able to win just by appealing to a specific group such as residents of large cities and ignore the concerns of the rest of the population.

There is also the problem of vote fraud which is most common in certain areas where people do not know each other or which are controlled by political machines. The popular vote is therefore very inaccurate but it is usually does not matter , since it does not matter whether a candidate carries a state by 80% or

by 55% but it would matter if popular vote decided the election.
