It would be helpful if you would give the ages you have in mind.

I would urge anyone teaching the Holocaust to make sure students don't think it's a synonym for World War 2. They also need to be aware that it was genocide, and they need to understand what that means.

The students need to be aware of the difference between extermination camps and ordinary concentration camps, as otherwise a lot of what they read about the subject may not make sense to them.

Students also ought to be aware how the Jews were persecuted to the point of being prevented from earning a living. They should know about the Nazi ghettos in Poland and elsewhere, and the names of the extermination camps.

They should have some knowledge of the background, too. In particular, they ought to know that in much of Europe the Jews have been demonized for centuries. The point is that one can't just pick any group for scape-goating. (For example, scape-goating people with red hair doesn't work).
