Retroperitoneal organs are located behind the peritoneum. The kidneys, pancreas, duodenum, ascending colon, and descending colon are all retroperitoneal organs.

Retroperitoneal organs are found behind the peritoneum, between it and the abdominal wall. These include the kidneys, adrenals, and pancreas.

Primarily retroperitoneal:

  • urinary
    • adrenal glands
    • kidneys
  • digestive
    • esophagus (partially)
    • small intestine (partially; for example duedonum with the exception of its first part)
    • ascending colon and descending colon
    • rectum (part, lower third is extraperitoneal)
