Generally, school lockers are made of steel. Sheet metal, mostly, as some are stronger then others and others are more durable then some, but for the most part lockers are genuinely made of steel riveted together, sometimes wood, plastic and laminate are also used.
There is no recorded date of the first use of lockers. The first lockers were probably just simple stacked cupboards with a padlock. In the last 10 years, lockers have developed beyond the traditional steel lockers that have existed for years. The eXtreme Plastic Locker is the latest in locker design that eliminates alot of the problems of the steel locker, including rusting, denting, scratching and they are also waterproof.
There is no recorded date of when the first locker was invented, but the concept behind personal storage at schools has been around for hundreds of years.

Lockers of all sorts have existed since time immemorial. It would be difficult to isolate the origins, but is is certainly long before the silly answer given of "1992".It is reported elsewhere on the Internet that the oldest known lock was found by archeologists in the Khorsabad palace ruins near Nineveh. The lock was estimated to be 4,000 years old.Since locks where invented, people have locked up items of value, hence the name "locker" could be applied to any area or container where access was limited by the use of a lock.So for simplicity's sake, Lockers were invented in approximately 2000 B.C.
Traditional school lockers are constructed from steel, although there are now plastic lockers available that are made from polyethylene.
Most school lockers are typically made of welded metal. Welded metal is inexpensive and durable. Many school lockers can also be made of painted steel metal sheet.
School lockers are made from off of a factory rack in a factory. This is much like how most products that require large quantities happen to be made.
