The complications of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 include, but are not limited to neuropathy (damaged nerves), nephropathy (damaged kidneys), retinopathy (damaged retina of the eyes), increased risk for myocardial infarction (heart attack), poor blood circulation, hyerglycemia & hypoglycemia (fluctuation of sugar levels), and infections. The bove is not an exhaustive list of the complications of tye 2 diabetes.
Secondary complications of diabetes:
Heart disease (attacks)
Circulatory system degradation
Loss of kidney function up to and including total renal failure
Loss of vision up to and including blindness
Stroke
Hemophilia
Gangrene resulting in amputation of digits/limbs
Nerve pain
Insulin "reaction" induced coma/seizures
Loss of mobility
Shortened lifespan
That's just starters. Diabetics don't get one or two of those secondary complications. They get ALL of them. Once you're diabetic, the condition slowly eats away at almost every body system, any of which eventually kills you. Even if you manage your diabetes well, you can only slow these complications down. The cause of death for people with diabetes is usually listed as one of the complications, but not as diabetes.
For example, my father died from diabetes. It caused his renal failure that led to his heart attack, then coma and death. His cause of death was listed as heart attack secondary to renal failure. Nowhere was diabetes mentioned. Yet that was the real cause of his death.
Sadly as Dr Harvey Katzeff put it "people don't die from diabetes, they die from complications. Complications include heart disease, stroke, poor kidney function, peripheral arterial disease and nerve damage. Poor blood supply to the feet can lead to ulcers, which in severe cases require amputation of the affected limb. Diabetes is also the most frequent cause of blindness among adults.
Secondary complications of diabetes includes optic neuropathy, kidney nephropathy, complications in the heart, kidney failure, slow wound repair, and possible diabetic foot.
