Secondary storage devices are not limited to USB pens. There are also, external hard drives, tape drives, jazz drives, scsi drives, cd's dvd's etc. These devices are primarily used for backing up any important data, which a user / company need.
Also as a note to the previous answer, usb pens, vary widely in size from 128Mb up to now, i think its 8Gb. And I wouldn't be surprised if the 8gb limit is lifted even higher sooner or later.
