The solenoid of an automobile is associated with the starter system and transfers an electric current into the starter motor to set the engine into operation. When the ignition key is turned, current is released from the battery and travels along an insulated wire into the solenoid. The solenoid then releases a small plunger that creates a connection between two internal electrical posts, sends the current down another wire to the starter and forces the starter motor to spin.

In general, a solenoid is an electromagnet with a movable metal core. Any coil of wire with current flowing through it will induce a force moving perpendicular to the wire. In the case of a coil wrapped around a cylinder, this force would be directed along the length (through the center) of the cylinder. As such, if you place a movable ferromagnetic (such as iron, nickel, or cobalt) rod through the center of the coil, it will move when current is applied to the electromagnet. This allows a mechanical action to be controlled by the solenoid.
