Overdrive is controlled by the shift solenoid, and vacuum modulator. the kick down you refer to is not overdrive but passing gear and should also be controlled by vacuum.

I'm not sure about a Pontiac, but on my mom's Ford Escort it is located under the all the plastic housing where the gear shift is mounted on the floor. It should be located somewhere near your safety interlock override button, as this is attached to the solenoid itself. You can use the override button to bypass the solenoid if it quits working so that you can get at least get your car in gear until you get a chance to replace solenoid.
The starter solenoid should be located on the inside fender close to the battery. It will have the positive battery cable connected to it.
Replace the tranny fluid, if check engine light comes back on, replace shift solenoid.
Your overdrive light could be faulty. You should check your fused and replace the one associated with the overdraft button.
This question implies a lot of knowledge and suggests that the questioner already knows the answer. If the stalling occurs when you are slowing down to say come to a stop, then being in overdrive would stall the engine just like forgetting to push the clutch pedal on a std xmsn car. You are locked into overdrive. Overdrive is achieved by solenoid action in the tranny. If the solenoid is not automatically disengaging like it should when one slows down, then stalling will occur. If shifting manually to lower gears as one slows helps then the solenoid is probably sticking. Try disconnecting the solenoid wire at the connector at the front of the tranny, accessible from front of the vehicle with the hood up. Just reach down and separate the connector wires and then drive the car to see if this stops the problem. You can run this way w/o harm or open the tranny and replace the solenoid. You will just lose a couple mpg w/o overdrive. I think it can be replaced w the tranny still in the car, not sure.Richard
If the code is P0773, it should be located in the transaxle......according to the manual. You have to drop the oil pan and then you have access to the solenoid.
Your starter solenoid is sticking. Replace the starter solenoid and you should be good to go.
Your shift solenoid is located at the front side of the transmission housing to the left of your exhaust manifold. If you are standing in front of the car, look below the distributor and you should see two solenoid sets. The bottom is your shift solenoid.
Best advice? Get a shop manual for vehicle from any auto parts store.$20 + or -.It should have a "trouble shooting" procedure for the transmission.
