I would say all of the littering on the highways or maybe all the pollution and smoke that goes into the air

Iodine collects in the thyroid. If there is a radionuclide of iodine "loose" then we might end up ingesting it and having it collect in our thyroid. The radionuclide would sit there and irradiate us. That's not good. It's a bad idea to have radioactive iodine in the environment.

One of the largest smelters that can handle about anything is in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Environmental concerns in the US have led to a steady decline in that industry. There are still small concerns in the US, but they are highly regulated and just barely making a profit. They are located around The Great Salt Lake in Utah and some smaller ones in Nevada. The small ones in Utah are about dead, if not already by this writing. Everything is going overseas. China is big right now, with big problems to boot.
