The purple heat is solely awarded for military members who are wounded or killed in combat from enemy actions. It could be from a concussion from an explosion our losing multiple limbs. There are some cases where members in support of the fight such as on a naval ship are injured not directly by enemy action, but while conducting operations against the enemy and can also be awarded the people heart. Yes, I know of one that was awarded and I have it. My grandfather(FRANK YALCH) was a Scout in WW1. He fought in 2 battles, he was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the Battle of Argonne and was in the hospital when the cease fire was called. He was awarded two metals, one being a purple heart.
