When was aikido found?
The exact date of when it was founded is not clearly known. Some will claim a specific date however nobody knows for sure. Generally, Morihei Ueshiba trained in martial arts for many years. Aikido and Ancient Japanese Jiu-Jitsu go almost hand in hand. Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is considered the Grandfather of Aikido. Many of the techniques involve manipulation of joints to move a bigger person without the use of strength. Aikido is believed to have been started in the 1920's and was developed further in the 1930's. Aikido was eventually spread to the rest of the world starting in the 1940's and 1950's by several of Ueshiba's students.
Why did aikido begin?
Aikido began when a Japanese man now reffered to as O Sensei (great teacher) took Ju Jit Su. He thought "what if there was a way to defend oneself without hurting the opponent. He took some Ju Jit Su techniques, and some of his own and invented a way to keep out of harms way. While not having to severly hurt your opponent. Therefore he created Aikido. Which, in Japan, means harmonzing with energy. This is a way to not hurt yourself, or your opponent, while still defending yourself.
How do you score in aikido?
There is no competition in Aïkido. Aïkido is a defensive Martial Art, where there is no "opponents" but "partners". Some competitions were created in Japan. But were not successful.
How long takes to learn basic aikido?
There is no specific time. Aikido is self paced and some people will promote faster than others. Generally, once you reach a black belt rank, there becomes time restrictions before you can promote to the next Dan ranking. I know an Aikido Sensei who has over 40 years of Aikido experience, and he is a 6th Dan. Most people have a misconception of rank. Again, generally speaking, once you reach 3rd Dan, there is no difference to the next rank and so forth. It is merely "status" and political. You can be recommended for a Dan ranking and be promoted. That does not mean you are any better or know any more than a lesser rank.
