South Carolina was the first state to secede.

North Carolina opposed secession, and Virginia looked as though it would too.

But secessionist feeling began to spread in Virginia, and after the attack on Fort Sumter, it voted Confederate.

This left North Carolina totally surrounded by Confederate states, so it reluctantly seceded too.

When Sherman came up from Georgia in February 1865, he punished South Carolina harshly for having started the war, but told his men to treat North Carolina leniently, as that state was less guilty.
