The biggest disadvantage is that the costs of producing crops or livestock often outweight the income recieved from the sale of these products. The income a farmer recieves per pound or bushel is less than 10% of the amount the consumer pays at the grocery store for that same food source--or at least part[s] of it. It's certainly not an occupation where you can get rich quick!!

Another disadvantage is that farming is comparable to mining as being one of the most dangerous careers a person can have. Many threats exist on the farm from being mauled and trampled by an angry bull to getting caught up in a PTO shaft.

Being a farmer also means you're at the mercy of Mother Nature. It can flood, hail, freeze, become so dry nothing will grow anymore, or bring forth the fury of the winds in the form of a tornado or hurricane. Any of these can cause serious damage to crops and livestock as well as facilities and machinery owned and used on that farm.
