The advantages and disadvantages of living in Tokyo depend a lot on whether or not you're a city person. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the Tokyo metropolitan area is most densely populated place on Earth. What you get with that is a whole lot of access to culture, business and education, but also an overwhelming amount of humanity. It's both a huge city and its own prefecture, or state. The metropolitan area is divided into a number of wards as well as smaller cities, towns and even villages within the larger Tokyo umbrella. You'll find the entire area is very modern and cosmopolitan, and at the same time the Japanese respect for traditional culture and values allows older neighborhoods and even buildings to coexist alongside shiny new urban dwellings and offices. In spite of its size and populations, Tokyo is a much cleaner city than any large city in the United States -- again, that's a reflection of traditional Japanese values of respect for cleanliness. Getting around can be a disadvantage especially if you're determined to drive. But Tokyo (and Japan in general) has a very well-designed public transit system and you can get almost anywhere in the metro area via bus, train or subway. One Japan Rail system, the Yamanote Line, is notable because it is a circle that loops around many of Tokyo's most notable districts, and if you miss a stop, you can just stay on and the train will go by the station again.
