Why does drugs abuse occur?

Since drugs are addicting it is not hard to become dependent on drugs. Drug dependence may lead to abuse as the addiction may lead to an overuse and complete reliance on drugs that may not be readily available to you. This may also lead to the fabrication of drugs using household materials or household cleansers which is in itself an abuse of potentially addictive substances. Abuse of prescription medicine or even non-prescription medicine can also be seen as abusive to drug use and is therefore drug abuse.

Because people are not using them because they're ill - they're using them to deliberately alter their state of mind. Almost all drugs - if taken over a prolonged period of time - are addictive !

All substances that are considered, "Drugs of abuse," have one thing in common. That is they all activate (to varying degrees) the reward pathway which is a region of the brain that originates in the ventral tengmental area and projects to the nucleus accumbens. Introduction of all abusable substances cause increases (albeit via different mechanisms) of the neurotransmitter dopamine into the nucleus accumbens. Cocaine for example inhibits the reuptake of dopamine from the synaptic cleft resulting in the net effect of increased dopamine in the reward pathway. Amphetamines bind to dopamine receptor sites and act as agonists (activators) of dopaminergic cells. This is an oversimplification nevertheless all substances of abuse share this common mechanism of action; activation of the reward pathway. Hope this answers your question.
