It depends on what they are upset over.
If they are tired and cranky holding them and petting there back works well.
If there not getting there way and are crying. A normal 8 year old thing, I tap my kids on there bottom and tell them to knock it off or there going to get lose privilages.
If there upset over somthing that happened like a sibling pushed them over and they scraped them self I call the offender over and repromand the offeneder and have them apoliges to the victim. The offender gets in trouble depending on if it was an accident or not. Normaly very easy to tell.
My favorite thing though if my kids get them selves worked up is the hot cocoa or chocolate milk method. I set them down in a quite area or on the kitchen counter talk to them about silly things while i make the drink. ( My one daughter cant have the milk so she get's a glass of really cold water/ apple cider or warm apple cider with caramel and cinimon. Or hot camamile tea.
