A submachine gun is a fully automatic (i.e. machine gun) armament that uses pistol cartridges instead of rifle cartridges. The most famous exaple would the Thompson M1921; which uese the .45 ACP cartridge. Other well known submachineguns include the German MP40 (9x19mm Parabellum); Russian PPSh-41 (7.62x25mm), or the more modern H&K MP5 (9x19mm Parabellum).
