South America is entirely south of the Tropic of Cancer.

  • Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana are entirely between the Tropic of Cancer and the equator.
  • Ecuador and Colombia are on the equator.
  • Brazil is on both the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.
  • Peru and Bolivia are entirely between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.
  • Chile, Argentina and Paraguay are also on the Tropic of Capricorn (in addition to Brazil).
  • Uruguay (and the British Overseas Island Territories attributed to South America) are entirely south of the Tropic of Capricorn.
The capitals of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay are farther from the equator than the capitals of the U.S. states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The main continent consists of twelve independent countries plus part of France (French Guiana). The primary language of Brazil is Portuguese. The primary language of French Guiana is French. The primary language of Suriname is Dutch. The primary language of Guyana is English. The primary language of every other South American country is Spanish.

The time zones on the main continent range from UTC - 5 hours (Colombia Time, Ecuador Time and Peru Time) to UTC - 2 hours (Brasilia Summer Time and Uruguay Summer Time). Brazil is the only South American country (not counting France) that is divided among multiple time zones. Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and parts of Brazil observe Summer Time (a.k.a. Daylight Saving Time).

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be the first Olympics to be held in South America (in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). They will also be the first Summer Olympics to be held entirely in winter (the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney opened in late winter but closed in the spring). Opening ceremonies are scheduled for August 5, 2016, which is the middle of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
