My cat eats Alpha. It's a grain-free food made by Natural Balance so it has a good amount of protein, but not too much to upset his tummy. There are lots of fruits and veggies in it as well, and it's really good for his skin and coat and just overall health.

Can cats get fat?

Yes, cats can indeed get fat. It has nothing to do with a cat's coat pattern. Cats become overweight due to being overfed or fed low-quality food. Many dry foods and low-quality wet foods are often packed with carbohydrates - "filler" in the way of grains and cereals, none of which cats can digest or gain any nutrients from. Grain is used instead of meat because it is cheaper to produce and helps kibble pieces hold together. Cats need MEAT based protein, not PLANT based protein. Cats will often overeat on lower quality foods because they are not getting all the nutrients they need, which often results in obesity and diabetes.

How does the cat's ability to metabolize carbohydrates differ from the dog?

Cats are carnivores thus rely mainly on protein diet. Cat also take in carbohydrates from plants but metabolize it differently from the dog. They store the excess in their body as fats rather than glycogen that is excess glucose. However; a dog's diet contain a lot of carbohydrates.

Do cats require protein?

Yes, cats are naturally almost pure carnivores, they need a high protein diet.

What foods give cats protein?

Meat and eggs both are naturally very high in protein. Seeing as cats are strict carnivores, they need a lot of protein in their diets in order to stay healthy. This is why it is best to give your cat food that is high in meat content. Giving a cat one scrambled or raw egg once a week serves as a very tasty and nutritious treat.

Do cats eat unheathy food?

It may be hard to believe, but many pet food brands, even brands including, Purina, Friskies, Meow Mix, Fancy Feast, Whiskas, IAMS, Royal Canin and Science Diet (despite the price!) that are found on supermarket or store shelves (or heavily promoted by veterinarians) are incredibly poor quality, which in turn provides little or no nutrition to the cat. Many brands of dry and low quality wet food are packed with corns and grains. This is cheap carbohydrate filler that the food manufacturers use as its a cheaper source of protein than meat is. Cats are strict carnivores, so can only get their nutrients from meat-based protein, not plant-based protein. Grains, not only are completely indigestible, is one of the main causes of obesity, diabetes and other health-related problems in cats. A cat's stomach cannot digest such complex carbohydrates, and most of the time it gets stored as fat, or passes through the cat's system (which creates smelly and runny stools and bad gas). Some cats will vomit whole biscuits back up on a regular basis because their stomach cannot process it at all. Not only that, but some certain foods commonly found in low-quality pet foods can - and have - caused food allergies in cats, such as Ground Corn, Corn Gluten Meal and Soybean Meal. Soybean Meal has since been banned from a lot of pet foods, but sadly the others are still found in abundance. A lot of such foods (particularly dry food) are sprayed with animal fats and glucose in order to make the food irresistible to a cat. In fact, many cats become "hooked" on low quality foods because of this - so much so they will turn their nose up at high-quality, high-in-meat-content foods! The best and only way to determine if a certain brand or food is good or bad quality is looking at the ingredients, and learning what the ingredients mean. Cats are strict carnivores, so get all their energy from Protein and Fat which is abundant in meat. The best cat foods are the ones with a very high, named meat content (labelled as Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc.) as the FIRST ingredient, or first three. The ingredients list is always listed with the heaviest weight being first, and it is even better if the meat content is shown as a percentage (such as 50% or more).

Can animals be fed a diet with no carbohydrates?

That depends on the type of animal. You certainly can't expect an herbivorous animal like a cow, a rabbit, or a horse to survive on a diet of protein and fat. On the other hand, carnivorous animals such as crocodilians, big cats, and sharks aren't meant to eat any significant amount of carbohydrates, and could probably survive just fine on a diet of only fat and protein.

What smells good to cats?

As cats are carnivores, foods such as meat will naturally smell good to cats. Fish and other strong smelling foods will also attract a cat. Cats have an acute sense of smell, and generally will be attracted to foods that are stronger-smelling than others.
