I seriously doubt you will be able to maintain best friend status. Friendship is very much and two way street and it sounds as though the friendship is flowing pretty much one way here (you to him). You probably don't mind it, but he is going to grow to resent it. Back off. Maintain a distant but casual friendship if you must. He may come around someday but I wouldn't bet on it.
