Okay so when you own a budgie you must make sure that when you buy them from the store they are not sick (you can tell by looking at if they are fluffy or not) then check if they are male or female (males have blue noses and girls have like a dark pinkish red) okay so your going to need a cage you can buy a cage if your only getting one budgie then I'd consider you can get it a small cage (or medium size) You have to give it fresh water and fresh food every day, also fresh water. You have to make sure you put newspaper at the bottom of the cage so you can clean it by just taking one sheet of the dirty newspaper of. :) good luck also try to feed them charcol, it helps their tummy. good luck on your new bird (buy "hagen" brand for your budgie it's best

= cage/habitat First you need to get a good cage for your budgie. Make sure it's the right size- most medium sized cages you see at stores and at pet stores are for 1 or 2 budgies. Make sure that the bars aren't too wide apart though because you don't want your budgie to slip through the bars and escape. You need food dishes and water dishes. It is also good to have a swing and some toys because budgies love to play, especially if you only have one budgie- they need something to keep themselves occupied. Cover the bottom of the cage with newspaper or paper towel. (Paper towel is what I used)

Some people use sandpaper or gravel paper but this can rip apart their poor little feet- I stopped using it because my favorite budgie was always hopping around on the bottom of the cage, and his poor little feet were just scratched up, peeling and raw, so I immediately stopped using the sandpaper. and change the cage once a week or so, when it gets dirty. Once every couple weeks to a month it is good to take out the toys, perches, and dishes and clean all of them in hot water. You can scrub them too, a toothbrush works best but don't use anything on it but water, because having the budgie's things contaminated with soaps and cleaners, etc. can make it sick. Wash out the cage when you wash the toys too, just give it a warm water rinsing and a wipe down with a paper towel or a cloth. It's also good to rearrange the cage once a month or so. They seem to like things changed around every once in a while. I know that mine did, they would get back in their cage and go explore everything. Make sure that you put the cage somewhere with a good temperature, around 70o F, and away from drafts or direct sunlight. They do like the sun but if the whole cage is put directly into the sun, they can get overheated, and having the sun shine in their eyes is of course not good either. If you do put your budgie's cage in the sunlight, then cover about half of it with a sheet or a towel so that they can go in the shade if they need to.

nutritionBudgies need to have food and water. Your budgie should always have a fresh supply of food and water. Change the water daily, or as needed and clean the dish and refill as needed, too. When budgies eat their seed, they leave the seed hulls behind. Seed hulls are the little hard coverings that the budgies break the seed out of to eat. Just blow lightly on the top of the dish and they will blow out. Be careful not to blow too hard or have your eyes open wide while you do this because you could get the hulls blown upward and into your eyes, which I have done and it hurts.

As far as bird seed is, just buy a bag of it with a variety of stuff in it. The kind with little pieces of various things and different types of seed in it is better than just the plain brown kind that has only one kind of seed in it. Budgies also need gravel grit. You can buy this in a box, usually, and you just pour it into a dish, and put it in the cage. I also spread some gravel grit on the bottom of the birdcage. Budgies need this because they do not have stomach acid like we do. They eat the gravel grit, and then it goes into their stomach. It helps to grind up the food they ate so that they can digest it. Also, buy a cuttlebone. These can usually just be attached to the inside of the cage. The cuttlebone provides calcium for them, and is always really good to have in the cage. Budgies usually also LOVE lettuce. You can give them one or two leaves of lettuce, but not too much too often or they will get diarrhea. Only get the bagged darker green lettuce, NO ICEBURG LETTUCE. this is bad for them. Be sure to wash the lettuce thoroughly. even if it's pre-washed, it's a good idea to make sure that it isn't contaminated with pesticides or anything, because this does happen.

healthThere is too much to put here... if you are having problems with your budgie it should be taken to the vet. I usually haven't had problems with my budgies getting sick. One got a cold-type sickness once, and another time one got hurt, but as long as you follow what you read here and in books your budgie should be healthy. They can live 10-20 years, on average.

I hope this stuff helps, I have had about 15 budgies in the past 8 years or so, and I used to breed them, so I've had a lot o experience with them. Take good care of your budgie and give it lots of love- I had some VERY tame budgies who talked and were always on my shoulder, and were very nice birds, so hard work with them will be rewarding. One way is to add a bell for them to play with but to keep a male budgie busy just give it a mirror it will look in it for hours it falls in love with itself
