Rodent recipes

Bunny Bites (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, and Chinchillas)

"These cute little cookie-like snacks are great for treating your pet! They have a nice, rich honey and peanut butter flavor that rabbits love! You can also try experimenting by adding oats, nuts, or various dried fruits to find out which food your pet likes the best. Also, these snacks are people friendly, so don't be afraid to try one or two yourself!"

2 cups cornmeal

2 1/2 cups all,purpose flour

2 tablespoons honey

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 1/2 cups water

2 tablespoons butter

a dash of salt

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, and salt. Mix well by stirring or sifting together until everything is consistent and completely mixed.

2. Add the honey, peanut butter, water, and butter. Then use an electric mixer on a high speed to thoroughly cream everything together. Mix for several minutes, or until all the ingredients are completely blended, and a dough-like mixtures begins to form.

3. Check the consistency of the dough. It should be easy to shape and mold with your hands. If the dough seems too sticky, gradually add more flour as needed. If it seems to dry and crumbly, add a bit more water as needed to reach the desired consistency.

4. Prepare a cookie sheet by lining it with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Then begin to tear off small pieces of the dough and form them into marble sized balls, by rolling them between your hands. Arrange each ball onto the prepared cookie sheet and gently flatten it slightly.

5. Repeat with the remaining dough until you run out of dough, and can no longer make any more balls. Be sure to space the balls slightly apart to avoid spreading and merging while they cook.

6. Once all the dough has been incorporated into balls, arranged on the sheet and flattened, place the cookie sheet into the preheated oven. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until firm and golden. Remove the cookies form the oven when they are done cooking, and allow them to cool completely before serving. Store any leftovers in an airtight container. Makes about 4 dozen bunny bites.

Fruitcake Corn Balls (Mice, Rats, Hamsters, Gerbils, Chinchillas, and similar, small rodents)

"These cute little balls of cornmeal contain pieces of dried fruit for added nutrition and vitamins. The fruit also make them sweet and very appealing. One ball is a nice snack for an average sized rat or a similar size rodent. Serve a size that is appropriate to your pet.1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/3 cup yellow cornmeal

1/3 cup assorted dried fruit pieces

1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil

1/4 cup any unsweetened fruit juice

1. Preheat the oven to 250°F. Prepare a cookie or baking sheet by misting it lightly with non-stick cooking spray

2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine all to the ingredients except for the fruit juice. It the dried fruit pieces you are using are fairly large, you may want to mince them into tiny, very fine pieces before adding them to the mix. Try not to use any piece that is larger than a pea, and much smaller than that is ideal. Use an electric mixer on a high speed to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients until everything is completely consistent and fully incorporated into the mix. Once you have mixed all of these ingredients, you will have a thick, dry, crumbly mixture.

3. Slowly begin to add the fruit juice to the mixture, about a tablespoon at a time. Make sure the juice is completely blended in before adding more. Only add as much juice as you need to get a firm dough that is not sticky, but is soft enough to be molded easily and it not at all crumbly.

4. Once the dough is sufficient, begin to shape it by tearing off small pieces and rolling them between your fingers to form small, marble sized balls. As you form each ball, place it gently onto the prepared cookie sheet.

5. Continue with the rest of the dough until you run out of dough and can no longer make any more balls. Arrange the balls fairly close to one another, as they won't expand or spread out, but do not crowd them.

6. Once all the balls have been formed, place them into the preheated oven. Bake the balls for about 45 minutes, then turn off the oven completely, but leave them inside and cool, dry out, and harden until very crunchy. The next morning, or once they are completely cool, remove them from the oven. Store any leftovers in an airtight container. Makes about 4 dozen balls.

Cats

Calico Kitty Ribbons

"These cute little ribbons are wonderful for any feline, with their nutritional abundance of fiber and wholesome whole grains and vitamins. The recipe can also be made to suit a dog's taste as well. For a dog, shape the dough into cookies or biscuits rather than ribbons, and leave the cooked treats in the oven while it cools to make the treats hard and crunchy."

Ingredients:

1 cup whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons wheat germ

1/4 cup bran flakes

1/4 cup soy flour

1 tablespoon unsulphered molasses

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon sage

1/2 teaspoon bone meal

1/3 cup milk or water

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Add all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl, one at a time. Use an electric mixer on a high speed, to beat the ingredients together as you add them. Once everything is in the bowl, be sure to mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are completely incorporated and consistent.

2. The mixture will begin to form a dough. Knead it with your hands, working to mix any ingredients that aren't completely blended in. The dough should be soft. If it is too sticky, flour your hands, or add a bit of extra flour to the dough.

3. Transfer the dough out to a floured work surface. Flour a rolling pin, and use it to roll the dough out into a very thin sheet, no more than 1/4" thick; thinner if you can do this without tearing the dough.

4. Prepare a cookie sheet by lightly misting with non-stick cooking spray. Then use a sharp, non-serrated knife to carefully cut the dough into thin strips about 1/2" inch wide. Slice them to be no more than about 7 or 8 inches long. Or make them shorter if you prefer.

5. Carefully lay the ribbons onto the prepared cooking sheet, arranging them so that they lay flat, do not touch, and are not twisted or tangled in any way. Continue with the remaining dough until you cannot cut any more ribbons.

6. Place the ribbons into the preheated oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the ribbons are lightly toasted. Watch them carefully, as this thin, narrow shape has a tendency to suddenly cook and then burn. When the ribbons are done cooking, remove them from the heat and allow them to cool considerably, or completely, before serving to your pet.

Carrot & Liver Crunchies

"These cookies are rich in Vitamin A thanks to the carrot and liver. They also contain plenty of complex carbohydrates in the form of hearty whole grains. They will help give your pet sustained energy and plenty of nutrients. The sweet carrot flavor and meaty liver taste compliment each other well and make a tasty treat (to your pet anyway)!"

Ingredients:

1/2 cup precooked chicken livers

1/4 cup water

1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

1/4 cup cooked carrot, mashed

1 tablespoon soft margarine

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Add the cooked chicken livers in a blender along with the water. Blend the two together for several seconds on the highest speed. If necessary, stop the blender and stir, or scrape down the sides to ensure an even mix. Blend the liver and water until completely pureed.

2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the flour with the margarine, by stirring the two together until then are well blended. The mixture will be dry, and should consist of coarse crumbs. Make sure to mix this well to avoid any large clumps.

3. Add the liver mixture along with the mashed carrots. Then mix everything well, either by hand or with an electric mixer on a medium speed. As you mix, the ingredients will begin to form a dough and may become difficult to mix. As they do, use your hands to knead this mixture well, ensuring all the ingredients are fully mixed and incorporated into the dough.

4. Transfer the dough out to a floured surface and knead for several minutes to make the dough soft and easy to work with. Then, use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to a sheet measuring about 1/4" thick.

5. Prepare a cookie or baking sheet by greasing it with margarine, or oil, or by spraying with non-stick cooking spray. Then using a knife, a pizza cutter, or other utensil, cut the dough into tiny square shapes, each measuring about 1" square. As you cut out each square, arrange them onto the prepared cookie sheet.

6. Continue with the remaining dough, reusing any scraps that form, until you can no longer make any more squares.

7. Place the squares into the preheated oven. Bake for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the oven and allow them to cool completely before serving to your pet. Makes about 1 1/2 dozen liver crunchies.

"There a quick and easy, no bake recipe that your bird is sure to love! The recipe is simple enough to allow you to make as little or a much as you need, so you won't get stuck with a monster sized batch of goodies, for one tiny bird. It's a bit messy, but so easy and so tasty!"

Ingredients:

1 whole wheat bagel

commercially prepared pet bird seed mixture

raisins, as needed

2. Spread peanut butter in a thin layer over all surfaces of the bagel.

3. Then dip the bagel piece in the seeds. Roll it around until all the pieces are coated well with seeds, and the bagel is no longer sticky.

4. Set the coated bagel piece aside. Repeat with the remaining bagel pieces, making as many as desired.

5. Stick a raisin or two onto the center of each bagel bite. The bagel bites are ready to be served immediately, or they can be refrigerated briefly, until ready to serve. Yield varies.

Birdie Birthday Cake"This festive cake recipe can be used for any special occasion that you celebrate with your bird. The recipe will make a small cake, which should yield many servings for a small bird, and a few servings for larger birds. You may also wish to try a piece yourself, the recipe contains ingredients which are all 'people's grade' and the sweet and fruity flavor of the cake appeals to people as well as pets."

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Cheerios® or Kix® cereal (or similar)

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 egg

strawberries, as needed

Instructions:

1. Add the Cheerios® or Kix® cereal to a large plastic Ziploc® Bag. Then use a rolling pin to crush the cereal into coarse powder. When all the cereal has been reduced to crumbs, pour it into a small mixing bowl.

2. Add the peanut butter, and egg. Mix well, using an electric blender to thoroughly combine all the ingredients until smooth and consistent.

3. Transfer the mixture to a very small bowl, such as a cereal or dessert bowl. Make sure you use a microwave safe bowl. Then place the bowl into the microwave and cook it for about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes.

4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. It will be slightly soft, but if it seems too gooey, place it into the microwave for about 10-20 seconds more.

5. Carefully remove the cake form the cereal bowl and invert it onto a plate. Check to see the cake is not gooey or watery. If it is, microwave it for another 10-20 seconds.

6. Place a handful or so of fresh strawberries in an individual sized bowl. Then mash the strawberries into a paste using a large spoon or other utensil. A few chunks are okay.

7. Frost the cake with the mashed strawberry. Decorate it, if desired, using small pieces of cut fruit, pieces of bird food such as pellets, chopped nuts, etc. Or serve the cake plain. To serve, simply cut off a slice appropriate to your bird's size. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. Makes 1 small cake.

Strawberry Pellet Bread"This bread is so easy to make it's not even funny. Plus any bird, specially parakeets and budgies will love it!"

Ingredients:

3 cups pulverized pellets (food processor is great for this)

2 eggs

Dogs

Apple Cinnamon Bites

"This recipe makes a nice apple-flavored, cracker-like treat. The little bites are crispy and sweet, without relying on processed sugar. They are also quite tasty for people as well, and are healthy and satisfying to people and their pets alike."

Ingredients:

4 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1 egg

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 medium-sized apple

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 1/3 cups water

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the apple and water. Mix well, using any large utensil, or even an electric mixer, to thoroughly blend the wet ingredients into the dry until everything is completely incorporated, and a dough has begun to form.

2. Using a vegetable grater, grate the apple, including the skin, but discard the stem, core and seeds. Then add the grated apple to the dough. Use your hands to knead and work the dough, and blend in the apple. Then slowly begin adding water, a small amount at a time, and mixing it in with your hands. The finished dough should be soft, and not at all crumbly. Use only as much water as you need to achieve this.

3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface. Knead well. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a thin sheet, about 1/4" to 1/2" thick.

4. Prepare a cookie sheet by lightly greasing it with margarine, oil, or non-stick cooking spray. Carefully transfer the sheet of dough on top of the cookie sheet. Trim any excess edges off, so that the dough fits the sheet perfectly. You may wish to incorporate the extra dough back in, but try to keep the surface as even as possible.

5. With any clean, straightedge surface, or a pizza cutter, score the dough horizontally then vertically, making a "grid of squares, each about 1" square. It isn't necessary to cut all the way through the dough, just leave a light impression.

6. Place the cookie sheet into the preheated oven. Bake for about for 1 hour, then remove from the heat and allow it to cool until safe to handle. When cool, use your hands to break along with "perforations" that you made, into tiny bite sized pieces. Serve when they are completely cool, or store in an airtight container until ready to use. Makes around 100 apple bites.

Apple Crunch Mini-Muffins

"These sweet, muffin-like treats are soft and tender when finished. They contain ingredients like apples, honey and vanilla, to give them a sweet flavor without using processed sugar. Both cats and dogs can appreciate their soft, spongy texture. Do not use fresh fruit for this recipe, and be especially wary of apple seeds, which can be toxic in some cases."

This recipe is good for most dogs.

Ingredients:

2 3/4 cups water

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

2 tablespoons honey

1 egg

1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup dried apple pieces

1 tablespoon baking powder

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix together water, applesauce, honey, egg, and vanilla. Stir and mix well.

2. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, apple pieces, and baking powder. Stir to combine. When the dry mixture is even, slowly stir it into the wet ingredients. Mix well by hand, until all ingredients are completely blended a consistent mixture ensues. The mixture will have lumps.

3. Grease miniature size muffin pans using butter or non-stick cooking spray. Pour the batter into the muffin cups, filling each one about 3/4 of the way full. When all the batter has been used up, place the muffin pans into the preheated oven. Bake them for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until they are slightly browned, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out dry. Remove and allow to cool completely before serving to animals. For smaller pets, break muffins into pieces. Store excess muffins in a covered container. Makes about 25 - 30 miniature muffins.

(BACK TO RECIPE LIST)

Beef and Veggie Rice Biscuits

"These biscuits are made from rice and flour, and are flavored with baby food. You can save yourself time by cooking the rice ahead of time, of the day before and keeping it in the refrigerator. You can also try using instant rice, which is usually very reliable, although some varieties might not give you very good results."

Ingredients:

1 large jar (about 6 ounces) any vegetable and beef baby food

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/4 cup uncooked rice

1 package unflavored jello

1 cup powdered dry milk

1 package dry yeast (about 2 1/2 teaspoons)

1/3 cup very warm water (110 degrees)

1 egg

1 beef bouillon cube

3/4 cup water

Instructions:

1. Cook the rice first, or ahead of time, if desired. You may follow the directions on the box, or add the rice to a heavy pot with a lid. Cover the rice with a generous amount of water. Then cover the pot, and bring the water and rice to a boil over high heat. When the water begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium. Let the rice cook for about 5-10 minutes more. Then reduce the heat to low, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is puffed and soft. When it is done, drain the rice well and let it cool completely.

2. When the rice is considerably cooled, preheat the oven to 300°F. Add the 3/4 cup of water to a small saucepan. Heat it over medium heat until the water just begins to boil. Then turn off the heat. Drop the bouillon cube into the hot water, and stir it until it dissolves.

3. Add the warm water to a small cup or bowl. Sprinkle in the yeast and then stir gently until the yeast is dissolved.

4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flours, gelatin powder, and dry milk. Mix well by stirring or sifting together.

5. Pour the bouillon mixture into the dry ingredients. Add the yeast/water mixture. Then add the baby food, the egg, and 1 cup of the cooked rice. Stir well, by hand, for several minutes, or until all the ingredients are completely incorporated into the mixture. You should have a dough begin to form.

6. Knead the dough inside the bowl with your hands, working to blend in any remaining ingredients and help make the dough easy to manage. It should be very dry.

7. Transfer the dough out to a floured surface. Knead a few times, then, with a rolling pin, roll the dough into a sheet about 1/4" thick.

8. Prepare a cookie or baking sheet by greasing with margarine, oil, or by spraying with non-stick cooking spray. Then, using a cookie or biscuit cutter, cut the dough into the desired shapes. Or, you can use a knife to cut the dough into squares or bars. As you cut out each shape, arrange it onto the prepared cookie sheet.

9. Repeat with the remaining dough, reusing any scraps that form, until you run out of dough and can no longer make any more cut outs. Then once all the dough is arranged onto the cookie sheet, place it into the preheated oven. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden. Remove from the heat when finished baking, and let the biscuits cool completely. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen, depending on size.
