Ships often carry rich historical names. Many of the great heritage lines, such as Holland America and Cunard, celebrate their heritage by commissioning new ships with former names of their former flag liners. Some of the most famous ships sailed as a representation of their nationality.

The ship that even today still holds the Blue Riband award for the fastest liner in the world is the SS United States. Although the ship remains rusting at a lone pier in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, US, occasional efforts to restore her to her former glory surface.

Holland America, today remains one of the world's favourite passenger liner companies. They feature (past and present) such great vessels as: The Noordam, Veendam, Hollendam, Rotterdam, Prinsendam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Volendam.

In their past glory, the Italian Line featured their two flagship liners the
Michelangelo and Raffaello before their final divestiture.

Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, more known, perhaps, as the French Line, sailed the finest ladies of the seas, such as the world renown SS France and Île-de-France, as well as the Liberté and the doomed Normandie.

The Hamburg-Amerikanische Paketfahrt-Aktien-Gesellschaft, known as Hapag-Lloyd now, were known for their stunningly sleek liners, the Imperator, and Vaterland. They also had begun, before the war, the ocean liner Bismark, which was transferred to the White Star Line and completed as the Majestic.

Britain ruled the waves with such famous Cunard-White Star Line liners as the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary, Mauretania, Olympic, and Britannic. And, of course, The doomed Titanic. And P&O (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) were the parents of the original 'Love Boat,' the Pacific Princess, plus sister ships, the Sun Princess and Island Princess. And the P&O flag carried thousands upon thousands of "ten-pound-pom's," aboard the beloved Oriana.

The Norwegians' most famous ships include the Sagafjord and Vistafjord.

Following the war, many of the above liners sailed with a mix between sailings and cruising. Today, their namesakes continue in the form of ships dedicated solely to cruising and those who continue to feature sailings as part of their annual schedules.

If you're looking for ships just for the cruising experience, one important factor to consider is passenger to tonnage ratio. This simple formula provides an excellent approximation of how much 'free space' is allotted per passenger.

Some people thrive on the experience of a kinetic holiday, especially if they normally live a quiet life. Yet others desperately long for the calm and quiet that many of the more traditional liners still offer where long-honoured traditions are still maintained. There's no right or wrong choice - it depends entirely on your preferences.

Mega-vessels such as Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas or Allure of the seas, and Norwegian Cruise Lines Epic can carry passenger numbers ranging from 5,183 on the Epic, up to 6,296 on the Allure and Oasis. Just the passenger count alone can dazzle the senses. It's when six thousand people decide at once to have dinner, or watch a theatrical performance that the vessel's design commands a sense of awe. And never lose track of the fact that on some ships, particularly those who offer highly discounted prices for 3,4, and 7-day itineraries, can have a child occupancy of as high as sixty-seven percent!

Yet for some, the very thought of a cattle-load of delirious people, from all walks of life, ranging from the coterie of Opera savvy, 'tux and tails lot,' to the celebrating 'Lads and hens' weekend - part of a junior Rap music championship, could provoke an instant coronary. If half the dining table is falling asleep, as your fellow dinner guests regale you with their recollections of a night at La Scala, they may be suffering equally from their own thrombosis as they watch the other guests drink from their finger-bowls, and compete over who can belch God Save The Queen loudest and fastest!

Scenarios such as these might be the perfect demotivator to cruising. Yet there are cruise ships which decline children, feature a crew to passenger ratio of three crew for each passenger, and promote their vessels as having open à la carte dining, spacious staterooms, and an overall air of tranquillity. It depends entirely upon you!

Choosing your preferred 'cruise' liner or 'sailing' is strictly a subjective choice. Yet, there can be a relatively simple rule of thumb to follow; the shorter the cruise - the higher the occupancy will be. And if you're seeking a 'kid-friendly' environment, there are numerous lines which cater just for that. Again, just keep in mind, bigger doesn't always mean better. If your idea of a grand time is going every day to a shopping centre, then some of the newest ships may be right up your alley!

But if you're looking for sheer luxury, then perhaps it's best to consider some of the all-suite vessels, where gratuities are not permitted, alcohol is included in the rate, and a silver-service is the norm when dining. There's something to meet everyone's desire!

For comparison of itineraries and a simple overview of all ships currently sailing, it may be advantageous to visit sites such as Vacations To Go as a reference point. This is not an endorsement, but merely a tool for quick access to comprehensive ship, itinerary, and date details.
