Issue one: may damage to ecology.
Issue two: controversy over the use
Genetically modified organisms are modified on a genetic level to benefit humans. How this can pose a threat to a population or ecosystem, is that if the genetically modified organism were to somehow create a mutation, and pass that on, it could be damaging to the future generations in reducing their health or other issues may arise. It can also be damaging to an ecosystem if a genetically modified organism were to escape into a wild population and change it.
One of the disadvantages of the genetically modified foods is that it allows animal products in plants which could raise issues for those with dietary restrictions like the vegans. The advantage of the genetically modified foods is that they can increase the crop yield in a very small acreage.
There are some who say they don't and that science proves it, but others claim there is evidence that GMO foods cause health problems, though not necessarily mutations, to humans.
Some argue that genetically modified food has no effects on human or animal genes. They also argue that GMO foods are the same as any other foods and have no negative health effects at all. Others argue that they might cause changes to our genes, and that they do cause changes to the flora in our intestines, possible sterilization, and other health issues. The FDA has declared then to be "substantially equivalent" to non GMO foods. In reality, we just do not know what effects genetically modified food have on our health or our genes.
One of the biggest issues in agricultural microbiology is the increasing presence of genetically modified foods. Farmers might genetically modify their crops to increase a yield or to sell to different companies, but the effects on the people who eat that food are potentially very dangerous. The issue has caused much debate throughout the years.
Ethics on genetically modified foods have more to do with how they have been approved and possible improprieties by the developers of GMOs and government agencies than the technology. Many cite lack of long-term studies (environmental, human, and animal) before GMO crops were approved by the USDA and also the FDA, leaving questions about any possible effects of genetically modified plants and foods on our planet and lives. Ethical issues also arise concerning what is referred to as the "revolving door" between biotech companies and government regulatory agencies. Some have questioned the validity of early studies which were done by the biotech companies and also issues related to the way the foods are approved.
That is exactly what some people want to do; however, the issues surrounding the use of GMO foods are vast and banning them is not likely. Some claim GMO food is necessary in order to "feed the world."

Ultimately, death. While much is still unknown about GMOs, emerging evidence is plainly indicating health issues related to ingesting GMOs; the list of countries that have banned them is quickly approaching 100.
