Behavioral adaptations

Ladybugs play dead when in danger because many of their predators won't eat insects that don't move.

They will sometimes gather together in a colony and hibernate all winter.

Structural adaptations

Ladybugs have hard shells that help to protect their wings and also prevent predators from eating them.

They have three layers of skin that change in response to background colors and patterns to mimic their environment.

A ladybird or ladybug is adapted to its habitat in that its coloring allows it to hide easily among the plants that it eats. It is also protected by an outer shell that is hard and that discourages bugs or birds from eating it.

The ladybug has several amazing techniques for survival. Ladybugs seem as if they would be easy for a predator to catch, since they are just small beetles with bright red coloring and black spots. But the ladybug has adapted to its environment by having a very unpleasant taste. Not only do they taste really bad, but they also can secrete a jelly from their legs that is even more bitter and bad-tasting. Thus, predators (birds, bigger insects, raccoons, etc) learn to associate the red coloring and black spots with "don't get too close-- it tastes bad and it might ooze something foul-smelling all over you!" In addition, ladybugs are quick, and if they sense danger, they can fly away. So, just like other animals know enough to avoid a skunk, the same is true with the ladybug, which has helped them to stay alive longer.
