There are three levels of law that could apply in Nova Scotia.
The highest level is Federal law, that defines things like criminal offenses, fisheries regulations, laws applicable to foreign affairs and international trade, national defence and so on.
The next level is Provincial law, which defines things like the laws applicable to operating motor vehicles, procurement of goods and services, education, energy and Natural Resources.
Finally, there are municipal laws that apply to activities such as the use of public parks and recreational areas, snow removal and on-street parking, parade permits, noise bylaws, land use bylaws, building permits and so on.
Some activities, like the delivery of health care services, are subject to all three levels of government, while others are defined in one or two of these levels.
