Gallipoli was a WWI battle Primarily between the English and Australians against the German supported Turks. The area was important only because who ever controlled it also controlled the a narrow straight of water known as The Dardanelles. Australia suffered heavy losses. I am not 100% positive but I believe this was the worst battle in number of casualties for Australia and New Zealand during WWI

For New Zealand in the early 1900's the loss of 5,000 men (approx) was a big loss. Many people alive today lost their grandfather or some relative in the battle at Gallipoli.
