The Impact of Neurotransmitters on Human Behaviour

Firsty we need to understand the procedure which neurotransmitters are released to understand its impact on behaviour. When an electrical impulse travels down the axon of a neuron it releases a neurotransmitter which then crosses a gap, which is called a synapse.Neurotransmitters are the chemical messenger in the body that relay information from one neuron to another, keep that in mind. Neurotransmitters are stored in the terminal buttons. After crosssing the synapse, the neurotransmitters fit into the receptor sites, like a key to the lock. Then through this the neurotransmitter can change behaviour, as varied as mood, emotions, sexual arousal and mental illness.

Example Of a Neurotransmitter Effect on Behaviour:

Epinephrine (also known as Adrenaline), is responsible for alertness, attention and cognition. It is releases by the two adrenal Glands. Its the Neurotransmitter that helps in positions that call for the 'flight or fight' process, to either flee or fight whats before you. This neurotransmitter prepares your body for the threat and deals with it, either by fighting it or running away. Adrenaline increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain by increasing the activity of the heart.

The Impact Of Drugs On Human Behavior

Overtime, drugs could become an addiction just like caffeine, it's important to see how this is reflected in the brain.Drugs are like chemicals, they work in the brain by tapping into the brains communication system and interfering with the way nerve cells send, receive and process information. Some drugs like Heroine, mimic that of a natural Neurotransmitter, fooling the receptors into taking them in and activating the nerve cells. They do not do what the neurotransmitters are supposed to do, rather they lead to abnormal messages being transmitted through the system. And through such, the brain will get wrong messages and alter your usual behaviour, or like such as caffeine, when taking a huge amount you feel energised and happy and extremely awake but as it wears off you start to feel tired and less energised, such is the same with drugs. While taking in huge amounts, you release dopamine which brings much pleasure upon the intaker, and when it wears off they start to feel the effects of the aftermath.

Hope it helped :D
