Africa is a large continent, and "African music" comes in many forms. Each country in Africa has its own musical traditions and favorite instruments. Thus, each country in Africa (for example Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, etc) would have a musical scene in which local musicians entertain the public. But also, some African musicians have become internationally famous: they came to America (or another country like England or Canada) and established themselves, blending African musical traditions with the traditions of their new country.

Marabi and Afrikaans music are some classic South African music styles. Reggae, gospel and kwaito are some more modern styles popular in South Africa.

Some musical styles that were popular in the south after the Civil War included brass band music and folk music. Also popular were duels that included banjos, guitars, and other stringed instruments.
