His parents were Andrej and Ulja Warhola (born 1892). They were working-class immigrants from Mikó (now called Miková), in northeastern Slovakia, then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. Andy had two older brothers, Ján and Pavol. His father worked in a coal mine.

Until third grade, Andy Warhol had a pretty much standard working-class kid's life. In third grade, however, he contracted Sydenham's chorea, a nervous system disease, known more commonly as St. Vitus' Dance. His father died in an accident when Warhol was 13. He finished high school, and then enrooled in college to study commercial art.
