Overdrive allowed is the NORMAL position ( if I'm on the highway and have to go down a long / steep hill , I like to cancel the overdrive with the switch on the end of the gear selector so the transmission stays in drive and gives some engine braking )
The transmission is on its way out.You could drive the vehicle with the overdrive function turned off to buy some time.
I believe that begining in about 1993, the transmission came electronically controlled. At a minimum, the valve body would have to be changed. It is better to find a unit form a 1990 to 1992. 1989 and earliers had a different shift linkage. The bellhousings are different between 2.9L and 3.0L engines. The pump is part of the bellhousing, therefore some disassembly of transmission is required. DO NOT attempt this if you are not familar with transmissions!
The overdrive off light flashing - indicates a malfunction has been detected
No, you do not, overdrive was design only for some extreme situations such as mountains, steep heals... If you keep on all the time your transmission fill fail because it was not made to extreme driving.
If your 1997 Chevy diesel will not shift into overdrive, you might have an issue with a transmission sensor. Some of these vehicles have several sensors that must engage in order to shift.
There are some early overdrive transmisions that don't work well when operating like in the example. These were built in the 1980's Otherwise just let the automatic transmission work the way it wants. Best fuel economy and transmission life will result.
default is of course 'on', does your overdrive switch not work? Overdrive should be saving on gas mileage...To change, you would likely need some way to access the cars computer. Goodluck with that.
On the valve body. Its called 3/4 shift solenoid some times.
yes u can the trany is the same up to 1996 some of them have overdrive and some dont bu basically is the same
My friends car did the same exact thing. It could be your transmission sensor. I am not exactly sure what the sensor is called but it has to do with the way it shifts. Overdrive sensor maybe?
